The vulnerability affects MCP's STDIO transport, which connects AI agents to local tools. The protocol runs commands without sanitization or separation between configuration and execution, meaning a malicious command can run immediately even if it later returns an error. The developer toolchain does not flag this behavior.

Researchers Confirm Exploitation on Live Platforms

OX Security researchers Moshe Siman Tov Bustan, Mustafa Naamnih, Nir Zadok, and Roni Bar scanned the ecosystem, finding 7,000 publicly accessible servers with STDIO active. They extrapolate that figure to 200,000 vulnerable instances globally. The team confirmed arbitrary command execution on six production platforms with paying customers, including LiteLLM, LangFlow, Flowise, Windsurf, Langchain-Chatchat, and others.

The research led to more than 10 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) rated high or critical across multiple AI frameworks and tools. Affected projects include LangChain, GPT Researcher, Agent Zero, and LettaAI, among others.

"This research exposes a shocking gap in the security of foundational AI infrastructure," said Kevin Curran, IEEE senior member and professor of cybersecurity at Ulster University.

Background: MCP's Rise and the STDIO Default

Anthropic launched MCP as an open standard for AI agent-to-tool communication. OpenAI adopted it in March 2025, followed by Google DeepMind. In December 2025, Anthropic donated MCP to the Linux Foundation. The protocol has been downloaded more than 150 million times.

The STDIO transport became the default for connecting AI agents to local tools. According to OX Security, this design means every command received is executed without any security boundary. Anthropic confirmed the behavior is by design and declined to modify the protocol, stating that input sanitization is the developer's responsibility. The company characterized the execution model as a secure default, a statement based on Anthropic's use of the word "expected" in their response.

What This Means for Security Teams

Organizations using any MCP-connected AI agent with default STDIO transport are exposed to potential remote command injection. The flaw is not a coding bug in individual products but a design default in the MCP specification that propagated into all official SDKs (Python, TypeScript, Java, Rust). Every downstream project that trusted the protocol inherited this weakness.

OX Security identified four exploitation families, including unauthenticated command injection through AI framework web interfaces. Security directors must urgently audit their MCP deployments to determine exposure and patch status.

Five Questions to Assess Your MCP Risk

  1. Am I exposed? – If your teams deployed any MCP-connected AI agent using default STDIO transport, yes. This includes deployments across any AI framework that uses the protocol's default settings.
  2. What exploitation vectors exist? – OX documented unauthenticated command injection, authenticated command injection via API misuse, and other families. Review their findings.
  3. Are my SDKs updated? – Check that you are not using the default STDIO configuration without additional safeguards. Anthropic has not issued patches, but some downstream projects may have released mitigations.
  4. Is input validation enforced? – Ensure all inputs to MCP-connected tools are sanitized. The protocol does not enforce this; it is entirely on the developer.
  5. What alternatives exist? – Consider using alternative transports that require more explicit command definitions, or implement a proxy layer that validates commands before execution.

Anthropic has not issued a standalone public statement and did not respond to VentureBeat's request for comment. OX Security argues that expecting 200,000 developers to correctly sanitize inputs is unrealistic. Anthropic's counterpoint is that sanitizing STDIO would either break the transport or shift the attack surface one layer down. The debate continues, but the immediate risk remains.
